The 2018 Invictus Games held in Sydney highlighted the importance of supporting our veterans and recognising the sacrifices and achievements of service men and women. Like the Invictus Games, Bears to School initiative also has a mission to raise awareness about our own nation’s heritage of service. Thus, it was a perfect match when the opportunity arose for Bears to School to partner with Team Australia.
As a result, Bears to School made sure that Team Australia enjoyed a little extra home ground support during the Games in Sydney. Each of the 72 athletes and their 44 accompanying support staff ‘adopted’ a Great War uniformed teddy bear for the Invictus Games. The bears have kept Team Australia’s athletes company as they competed in their events and travelled around the Games, and shared Australia’s unique heritage of service with fellow competitors and spectators.
Each member of Team Australia will donate their bear to a school close to their heart, sometime between the conclusion of the Games and the Centenary of Armistice on 11 November. The donated bears will help highlight Australia’s Great War history and the importance our service men and women – past and present.
Bears to School is proud of our Invictus athletes and their achievements, both as competitors and former service men and women.
